TITAN POLLUTION CONTROL LAUNCHES NEW SYSTEM TO TACKLE PHOSPHATE PROBLEM

Close

Leading manufacturer Titan Pollution Control has launched a revolutionary new system to reduce the amount of phosphate found in effluent from sewage treatment plants.

The PHORS (Phosphate Removal System) is the first-ever bespoke system designed to ensure levels of phosphates discharged from sewage treatment plants meet stringent requirements required within the most sensitive areas of the country, such as SSSIs.

Although sewage treatment plants are very effective at breaking down the main pollutants in sewage, they cannot reduce phosphates, which are often found in detergents and human waste. A build-up of phosphates from run-off into lakes and reservoirs can lead to algal blooms that deplete the oxygen levels within the water. This can have a serious knock-on effect for other aquatic organisms, killing fish and invertebrates as they become starved of oxygen.

In regions with large areas of standing water such as Scotland, Cumbria, Leicestershire and Rutland, the problem can be acute.

The PHORS tank is buried below ground, and is designed for treating effluent from populations of between 30 and 150 people. The tank removes phosphate from the effluent by treating it with an iron compound. The phosphate then drops out of solution, to be stored until the tank is emptied once a year.

In conjunction with the Biotec range of treatment plants, the PHORS tank can reduce levels of phosphate to 2mg/litre before the highly clarified effluent is finally discharged.

“The requirement to reduce levels of phosphates in effluent is becoming increasingly commonplace – it’s already widespread in Ireland and we believe that stricter legislation is likely to be imposed in future in the UK,” says Darren Crane, Titan’s UK sales manager.

“Until now, the only way to achieve this reduction has been cobbling together various components in a rather Heath Robinson fashion to bolt-on to the treatment plant. Now, people can just buy a PHORS tank off-the-shelf, saving time, money and hassle.”
